Janet's Story

Staff and service users at Outlook Care are being urged to ‘think green’ to meet our goal as an environmentally sound and socially responsible organisation. Leading the way is Autumn Cottage, a supported living home in Shoeburyness, Essex.

Everyone at Autumn Cottage, including their resident green champion, Janet, has been recycling and reusing everything they can, growing their own vegetables and saving water.

Chris Chaplin, Home Manager, explained, “Janet became our green champion after we read a story about our wonderful world which made us talk about how we could help to protect our planet.”

This planted the seed, and from here Janet decided that Autumn Cottage should do their bit for the environment. “We put together an ‘Environmental Journey through Autumn Cottage’ which detailed the things we could do in a more environmentally friendly way. We took photos of our garden, flowers and tomato plants and purchased two compost bins which we now use on our flower beds,” said Chris.

“We have bags and bins for recycling which we all use and we have looked at ways to reduce our electricity consumption. For example, wherever possible we use the washing line rather than the tumble dryer and we turn appliances off rather than leaving them on standby.”

Playing a role in all of these initiatives is Janet, who particularly enjoys putting her green fingers to use in the scheme’s garden.

“Janet helped us gain some great support from businesses such as ASDA, who donated a huge basket packed with fresh fruit from around the world,” explained Chris. “We also received donations from Costa Coffee, Starbucks and PG Tips, so thanks to everyone for their support and well done to Janet for setting an example for the rest of Outlook Care to follow.”
